Paul Lipp

Paul Lipp is a Connecticut oil painter in the classic realist tradition. His paintings reflect trips throughout the small towns and boroughs of New England as he searched for the perfect subject to be painted. “I never know what I am going to paint”, he explains, “I am dictated to by the scene”. His nautical scenes include aging wooden boats reflecting their beauty in the still water of a quiet harbor or a lobsterman in a dory riding the waves toward home. His still life compositions are masterful and detailed with elements of trompe l'oeil. Water droplets often glisten on his freshly washed fruits and vegetables and one senses the weathered character of his hand wooden baskets.

Born in 1937 in West Haven, Connecticut, Paul served three years in the Marine Corps, after which he attended Paier School of Art in Hamden, CT. He graduated as valedictorian of his class and was invited back for a fifth-year scholarship in advanced illustration. Paier immediately recruited the talented young student to become an assistant professor. Paul taught art for 18 years while pursuing his own fine art skills and accepting private commissions from such leading publications as Golf Digest and PGA magazine. He has exhibited his work in major shows at the Connecticut Academy, Springfield Museum, Mystic Maritime Gallery, Quinnipiac University and the Lyme Art Association, to name a few. He has received awards from the National Society of Illustrators, the Benedictine Fine Arts Competition and the Mount Carmel Art Association. In June 2008, his painting, “Peaceful Cove”, won best-in-show at the Sylvan Gallery's exhibition, “A Sense of Place”, juried by Lou Bonamarte.

Corporate clients include Bunker Ramo, Connecticut Distributors, Merrill Lynch, Conoco, Alberta Gas, Olin, IBM, Microdot, American Tobacco, Exxon, Pfizer and Pitney Bowes. Lipp's paintings are in over 500 private and corporate collections throughout the U.S. and Europe.
