Diane (Pardy) Farr brings intelligence, sensitivity, and a wide range of interests and passions to her work. Inspired by color and the play of light and shadow across all manner of subjects, Farr seeks out visual imagery that is beautiful or uniquely expressive of a mood or emotion— sometimes dramatic and direct, sometimes subtle or somewhat ambiguous. And while her sensibilities and skill continue to evolve, there are certain themes and approaches that she is repeatedly drawn to: the vastness and serenity of distant landscapes; the abstract patterns created by shadows, shapes, and reflections; the rhythm, flow, and contemplative stagecraft of still lifes; and the expression of likeness and character through gestures and facial expressions.
Painting exclusively in oils, Diane’s style combines elements of the old masters, tonalism, impressionism, and realism, and while traditional in approach, combines with a contemporary sensibility to create compositions that are simplified and uncluttered. Her technique varies a bit depending on the idea and desired effect. She starts with thoughtful planning and composition, exploring ideas of dynamic symmetry and golden section proportions. She then applies paint in either a painterly or more controlled manner, oftentimes utilizing layers of glazes to magnify or adjust colors, and sometimes scrubbing, wiping or scratching away paint to reveal the ground color again.
Named one of “21 over 31: Up and Coming Artists of Note” by Southwest Art Magazine (Nov. 2009), Diane has an MA in Fine Art from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. She’s also studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art and with noted artists including David Leffel, Sally Strand, and Michael Workman. Born and raised in Connecticut, Diane has always been creative and artistic, with a wide range of interests. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Duke University in Computer Science and Economics, and worked for 10 years in Boston in high-tech sales and marketing, indulging her passion for art in her free time. Following the birth of her first child, Diane decided to focus her time and energy on her family and her art. She now splits her time between Connecticut and Cleveland, Ohio.
Diane is an award winning, juried associate member of Oil Painters of America, Allied Artists of America, the American Society of Portrait Artists, the Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists, American Women Artists, and the National Association of Women Artists; and is past Treasurer and Board Member of Ohio Plein Air Society.
